Characteristic Bluster

Ghana

Text

It’s been a while since I’ve posted, so apologies to those few who occasionally stop by here to see what I’m up to or to see if I have anything ironic to share. I’ve been in Ghana a little over two weeks now, the first week largely in Kumasi, the second devoted to the Revisiting Modernization conference, now this third and last one I’m trying to see if I can find work at International school or as a lecturer at a Uni, ‘cuz if possible I’d love to stay on here instead of going back to NYC. Why? In part, because it would probably be a good thing for me. Don’t get me wrong, spending the fall in New York - what I’ll most likely wind up doing - I look forward to, especially with even more friends moving there, but who knows what kind of work I’ll actually find. Plus, partying is sure to be part of the mix, which is fine, but counter productive and at times regressive at this stage, and there you have it. In any case, I’ve sent out feelers to the 6 odd international schools in the area, maybe I’ll check out Kumasi too. Dev or NGO work is a possibility too, but finding work here, for here, from those places can be tricky, or seems to be so, and I’m not sure I have connections. In any case, I’ll be back at it soon. I had planned to go to Togo for a few days to see my step father, but that doesn’t seem to be in the offing now; I got a visa to Togo, but I went over to the Ghana Immigration office and they said that my visa is NOT good for re-entry. Still may go, but probably not a sharp idea, since I’ll have to apply for a visa to Ghana the minute I get there, and if there are any hitches I won’t make my flight. The conference was OK, nothing special. I always find spending so much time only with academics a mixed bag. On the one hand I really enjoy talking to them, when the talk is good, but the egos annoy me to no end, and I hate, maybe more than anything on this planet, the presumptive pretentiousness that accompanies so much banter; e.g. the assumption that my “intervention” has a direct relationship to or with the vital core of being itself. Or something like that in any event. Plus, aside from a few stray papers, I found most of them dull… ideology critique up the wazoooo, which is fine, but played out (especially with regards to the notion of modernization). I feel like reading ten pages of James Ferguson is more insightful than listening to the entire conference. I hope nobody in the know is reading this. At any rate, more soon. There are a few more things I want to share and that’s that.
